Hi Anita, I have just come across your website – a huge job, well done. What caused me to go hunting around was the news of the release of the post war Guy Liddell dairies. I have been following the Cambridge Five since the 1960s, as a fascinating story that keeps going over the decades, as more information is released from various archives.
I kept finding references to Tomas Harris, who all his acquaintances seemed to have found a very charismatic man. No one appears to have known him completely – what a mysterious man, and what a life he led! I have read Desmond Bristow’s book and found there the most detailed portrait of Tomas, only to be even more intrigued. I note you have had difficulties with the website and that’s a shame. Do you know of any other sources of information about Tomas (apart from the Garbo subject) and has anyone ever tried to put together a biography of him? I have a biography of Blunt and will have to re-check what is in there – an odd friendship they must have had, two opaque personalities! Again, congrats on your website, you have a special family.
regards, Judy O’Driscoll
PS. I live in Tasmania, as far away from the UK as you can get, but very popular with British expats.
My book “My Father, the Man Who Never Was” was published in November 2011 by Lilburne Press. It includes the remarks my father (Ronnie Reed) made in my interview with him in 1994, both about Tomas Harris and about Anthony Blunt. He worked with both.
I am now putting together a lecture to be entitled “War Artists, Spies, and Experts in Deception”. I would like to include some examples of Tomas’s work as an artist, and more details of the exhibitions he organised. However, I note that the Thomas Harris art website is the only one in your website which comes up as “not found”. Can one find it anywhere? Or is there some other way I can access images of some of his paintings, so I can show these images in my presentation?
